As June 25 approaches — the anniversary marking the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 — attention is once again being drawn to the generation that experienced war, division, displacement, and national reconstruction on the Korean Peninsula.
Among them was Song Chang-ryeol, a Korean War veteran and recognized transmitter of the traditional Korean martial art Subak.
Song Chang-ryeol was officially recognized by the Republic of Korea as a national merit recipient and patriotic veteran. Historical materials preserved by his family include military identification records, a military service notebook, veteran medals, and documentation showing his discharge with the rank of Sergeant First Class. Records and testimony also state that he participated in anti-guerrilla operations on Hallasan Mountain during the postwar period.
Beyond his military service, Song Chang-ryeol became known within Korean traditional martial culture as a transmitter of Subak, an old Korean martial tradition associated with striking methods, body manipulation, destabilization techniques, rhythmic body movement, and traditional physical conditioning systems.
Researchers examining the preservation of Korean martial heritage have increasingly emphasized the importance of Song Chang-ryeol’s role in maintaining practical movement traditions connected to pre-division Korean body culture. His demonstrations and training methods preserved forms of movement rarely documented during the twentieth century due to colonial disruption, war, modernization, and social upheaval.
Recent international archival and educational projects have also contributed to wider awareness of the Song lineage and Subak-related materials. English-language publications, colonial-era footage analysis, digital archiving projects, and open educational resource activities have helped introduce aspects of Korean martial body culture to international audiences.
As Korea remembers the sacrifices of the Korean War generation, the life of Song Chang-ryeol represents not only military service and national dedication, but also the preservation of traditional cultural knowledge through one of the most turbulent periods in modern Korean history.
His legacy remains connected to both the history of Korea’s struggle and the survival of traditional Korean martial heritage.
