Traditional Korean Body Culture “Subak” Expands International Community-Based Safeguarding Activities

The Korea Subak Association and the World Subak Federation LLC (Wyoming, USA) announced that they are continuing international community-based safeguarding activities related to Subak, a traditional Korean body culture and movement heritage practice.

According to the organizations, recent activities have focused on digital archiving, online educational seminars, international networking, and community-based transmission projects connected to traditional movement culture.

Subak is understood as a traditional Korean physical culture centered on hand-striking, body coordination, balance control, stepping methods, and community-based movement practices. In recent years, preservation activities have expanded through multilingual educational content, online seminars, and international cultural exchange efforts.

Organizational representatives have also participated in various international networking activities connected to cultural safeguarding and sustainable community discussions. These include participation in UNESCO-UNEVOC-related discussions, online webinars connected to international disaster risk reduction initiatives, and networking activities through the NGO Major Group platform, an international civil society participation network associated with sustainable development dialogue.

The organizations stated that their current focus is not limited to martial techniques, but rather the preservation of traditional body culture as a form of community memory, intergenerational transmission, and cultural diversity.

“We believe traditional movement culture represents more than physical practice alone,” a representative explained. “It reflects community identity, historical experience, and shared cultural heritage that should continue to be transmitted across generations.”
