The International Northern Ssireum Federation (INSF) has officially announced the launch of a global network dedicated to preserving and revitalizing “Bukbang” (Northern) martial culture. This initiative seeks to reconnect the fragmented lineages of traditional wrestling and warrior arts that once flourished across the Eurasian Steppe and along the ancient Silk Road.

A Living Legacy of the Displaced At the heart of the INSF’s mission is the authentic lineage of Korean Northern refugees. Following the mid-20th-century geopolitical shifts, many practitioners from the northern regions of the Korean Peninsula sought refuge in the South, carrying with them the raw, survival-based wrestling and martial traditions of the North. Unlike standardized modern sports, these practices represent a “Living Archive” of Northern Steppe combat philosophy—a distinct body intelligence centered on balance, leverage, and the explosive dynamics of Northern warrior heritage.

Beyond Sports: An Anthropological Bridge While contemporary organizations focus on the institutionalization of sports like Ssireum or Taekkyeon, the INSF distinguishes itself by focusing on the “original intent” of these arts as tools of survival and cultural preservation. By establishing partnerships with traditional wrestling communities in Central Asia, Iran, Afghanistan, and North Africa, the INSF aims to build a transcontinental network.

“Our goal is not to compete with modern sports federations, but to serve as a custodian of the Northern cultural DNA,” said a spokesperson for the INSF. “From the Bukh of Mongolia and the Kurash of Uzbekistan to the ancestral Northern wrestling of Korea, these traditions share a common ancestry rooted in the nomadic warrior spirit of the Steppe.”

A Strategic Global Vision The INSF’s network offers a unique platform for practitioners to exchange historical techniques and philosophical values. By framing Korean Northern traditions as a vital link in the Silk Road warrior network, the INSF provides a compelling academic and cultural narrative that resonates with historical truth and regional identity.

As the federation expands its international partnerships, it calls upon martial arts leaders, historians, and cultural enthusiasts who value the preservation of ancestral wisdom. Through this initiative, the INSF hopes to ensure that the spirit of the Northern warriors—once carried across the vast expanse of the Silk Road—continues to thrive in the modern world.
