The International Northern Ssireum Federation (INSF) has officially announced the launch of a global network dedicated to preserving and revitalizing “Bukbang” (Northern) martial culture. This initiative seeks to reconnect the fragmented lineages of traditional wrestling and warrior arts that once flourished across the Eurasian Steppe and along the ancient Silk Road.

A Living Legacy of the Displaced At the heart of the INSF’s mission is the authentic lineage of Korean Northern refugees. Following the mid-20th-century geopolitical shifts, many practitioners from the northern regions of the Korean Peninsula sought refuge in the South, carrying with them the raw, survival-based wrestling and martial traditions of the North. Unlike standardized modern sports, these practices represent a “Living Archive” of Northern Steppe combat philosophy—a distinct body intelligence centered on balance, leverage, and the explosive dynamics of Northern warrior heritage.

Beyond Sports: An Anthropological Bridge While contemporary organizations focus on the institutionalization of sports like Ssireum or Taekkyeon, the INSF distinguishes itself by focusing on the “original intent” of these arts as tools of survival and cultural preservation.
