Participation in WIPO Traditional Knowledge Education Connected to the Preservation of Korean Subak

The preservation activities surrounding the traditional Korean martial body culture Subak are continuing to expand into international educational and cultural heritage networks.

Recently, researchers and practitioners connected to the preservation of Subak began participating in educational programs provided through the Traditional Knowledge (TK) and Traditional Cultural Expressions (TCE) training framework of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations.

The initiative is connected to ongoing efforts to digitally document and preserve historical materials associated with the Subak transmission lineage, including archival photographs, oral history, colonial-era martial footage research, military service records of Korean War veteran Song Chang-ryeol, and educational resources related to traditional Korean body culture.

Subak has increasingly been introduced internationally through English-language research publications, Wikimedia projects, open educational resources (OER), and international cultural heritage discussions. Current preservation efforts also focus on digital archiving, historical verification, and long-term safeguarding of endangered traditional movement knowledge.

Researchers involved in the project emphasized that participation in WIPO educational activities is not about commercial branding, but about understanding global frameworks related to traditional knowledge preservation, cultural documentation, and responsible digital archiving.

The project additionally seeks to position Subak within broader international discussions concerning intangible cultural heritage, embodied cultural knowledge, and traditional physical culture education in the digital era.

Related activities involving Subak have recently included participation in UNDRR stakeholder discussions, submissions to international cultural organizations, OER educational archiving, and ongoing academic publication efforts connected to Korean martial heritage.
