Bridging Eurasia: The Silk Road Living Heritage and Sustainable Ssireum Transmission

The International Northern Ssireum Federation (INSF) is proud to announce an official side event at the 2026 United Nations High-Level Political Forum (HLPF). Titled “Bridging Eurasia: The Silk Road Living Heritage and Sustainable Ssireum Transmission,” this event will take place on July 9, 2026, from 13:00 to 14:30.

As the global community gathers at the UN to discuss the progress of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the INSF seeks to highlight the vital role of traditional physical culture in building resilient, inclusive, and sustainable communities.

Exploring the Silk Road Connection The Silk Road was historically a conduit not only for trade and commerce but for the exchange of human knowledge, physical education, and warrior traditions. The INSF’s HLPF side event will delve into how traditional wrestling styles—from Northern Ssireum to various Central Asian and Silk Road traditions—have served as a cornerstone of community identity and physical well-being for centuries.

By bridging these historical traditions with modern sustainability goals, the INSF aims to demonstrate how preserving intangible cultural heritage contributes to the “One Health” perspective, community cohesion, and the holistic development of youth.

Event Highlights:

  • Cultural Mapping: Analyzing the shared heritage of grappling arts and warrior physical culture along the Silk Road.
  • Sustainability & Heritage: Discussing how the transmission of traditional sports acts as a tool for sustainable education, fostering physical literacy and cross-cultural understanding.
  • Global Networking: Bringing together experts, practitioners, and civil society representatives to advocate for the inclusion of traditional sports in global sustainable development frameworks.

A Call to Action The INSF invites delegates, NGO representatives, and the international community to participate in this insightful dialogue. This event is not merely a reflection on the past but a forward-looking initiative to incorporate living heritage into contemporary development strategies.

“This side event represents a significant milestone for the INSF,” said a spokesperson for the Federation. “By positioning traditional Ssireum and Silk Road wrestling cultures within the context of the HLPF, we are emphasizing that the physical and social resilience of our ancestors offers invaluable lessons for the challenges of today.”
